Laerskool MOUNT PLEASANT Primary School
Proud to be a Mountie !!

Our “bulletjies” rugby teams are made up of u/6, u/7 and u/8’s (Grades R, 1 and 2’s). The boys play round robin matches at various schools during the schools’ sports days, since there is no league available for these youngsters.

Winning matches at this level is not as important as having fun. At practices, we focus on team-building, team spirit and developing good sportsmanship qualities.

The u/9 rugby team practises twice a week and plays matches on Wednesdays. We constantly have a large group of enthusiastic boys, who are ready to start the transition from “bulletjies” rugby to the u/9 level. Here the boys play 15-a-side rugby according to all the rules.

u/11 RUGBY

All Grade 4 & 5 boys are encouraged to participate and improve on the skills taught at u/9 level. The boys practise twice a week.

u/13 RUGBY

Grade 6 & 7 boys practise twice a week and play their matches on Wednesday afternoon.

One of the highlights of the rugby season is the sport tour together with our u/13 netball girls.

We cater for our grade 1 – 3 boys who practise once a week for an hour. The Grade 3’s play matches every Tuesday. We prepare the boys for hard ball cricket with the basic knowledge and skills needed for the game.

Mount Pleasant Primary hosts an annual mini cricket festival during the 1st term. It is a highlight on our calendar and the day usually attracts entries from around 17 schools from Port Elizabeth.

This is the introduction to “hard ball” cricket. Grade 4 & 5 boys are encouraged to take part in practices from Monday to Thursday during the 1st and 4th terms. The boys receive intensive coaching which focuses on their batting, bowling and fielding abilities.

Matches are played on Thursday afternoons. Some matches are one-day games and others are played over 2 weeks, batting one week and bowling the next.

u/13 matches take place on Wednesdays and the boys play their games over two weeks, batting one week and bowling the next.

Our school participates in an annual tournament played over three days at the end of the 3rd term. In this tournament, boys get the opportunity to play in 20, 35 and 50 over matches.

Mount Pleasant Primary School is affiliated to the USSASA (United School Sports Association of South Africa) PE Primary schools tennis.

Our players are very enthusiastic and we make every effort to make tennis enjoyable and fun.

First and fourth terms:
Boys league:  Matches are made up of singles as well as doubles games.

We practise on a Monday and play matches against other primary schools on a Tuesday.

Girls league:  Matches are made up of singles as well as doubles games.

We practise on a Monday and play matches on a Thursday.

Second and Third terms:
Boys and girls combine to play mixed doubles.  Each team is made up of 3 boys and 3 girls. The mixed doubles league only play doubles matches.

We also have a group of beginners and intermediate players.  A lot of effort is made to teach correct technique and skills so that they can progress to Intermediate phase. We have acquired the services of a professional tennis coach to develop our players.

Chess at Mount Pleasant Primary is very strong.  We have a junior and a senior team entered in the league.  Mrs Karin Ashworth is our coach.  She has inspired our learners to great heights.  The learners have been taught various openings and strategies to improve their games.  Her sessions are interesting and very informative. She is paid out of our school fees so parents are not expected to pay extra for her expertise.

We hold an annual “Chess Sleepover” to encourage learner participation and to have some fun.

League matches begin in the second term and we look forward to trying out our new strategies. We will be entering as many tournaments as possible again this year and hope to have more learners representing E.P.

We are thankful to all the teachers and parents who assist us with supervision and transport to the various league matches and tournaments. Without them we would not manage.

Thank you to all our learners for their loyalty to, and love for, the game of Chess.

Weekly practise sessions  are held during the week and matches are played on Friday afternoons.

Younger players are only accommodated on merit.

To prepare our learners for high school and to offer more variety for our girls, hockey has start as an official sport in 2017.

Hockey will only be offered to girls from Grade 4 to 7 and will be offered during the winter terms.

Players will be required to wear all protective clothing as prescribed such as a glove, mouth guard and shin pads.

Players must supply and bring their own stick.

Depending on numbers we will offer two age groups, u11 and u13.
